DEBATE TEAM

The Mississippi College Debate Team has a successful tradition in collegiate forensics, welcoming all students who want a challenge for membership in a learning community.  The key to success in graduate school, in the marketplace, in the business world, and in public service, is to have the ability to analyze problems, find logical alternatives, select a course of action, and persuade others of the correctness of your ideas through clear and organized communication. Competitive speech teaches you to be an informed advocate for your ideas and yourself.  The team is for those students who want to improve their mental abilities and their communication talents.  The team travels to several each year from St. Louis to Pensacola.

The team is one of the most successful programs in the nation.  Our tradition of speech and debate began nearly 80 years ago and since that time MC debaters and speakers have won scores of championships and numerous local and individual awards.  Our focus as a team is geared towards debate, particularly public debate.  Individual events (limited preparation, platform speaking, and interpretive reading) are also part of our focus.  Participating in intercollegiate speech and debate at Mississippi College will provide you with the skills and experiences necessary to make you successful in a variety of fields.

Students compete in parliamentary or public debate.  Students also learn resolution analysis, critical thinking, case construction, research skills, and presentation.  Students may compete in any or all of the eleven American Forensic Association individual events: limited preparation speaking events (extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking), prepared speaking events (informative speaking, persuasive speaking, communication analysis, and after-dinner speaking), and interpretive reading events (dramatic interpretation, prose interpretation, interpretation of poetry, and dramatic duo interpretation).
