WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The Communication Department at Mississippi College provides opportunities to develop a variety of academic, performance and professional competencies. The department prepares students to research, organize and effectively deliver oral, written and visual public presentations. Areas of concentration help prepare students to thrive in such diverse fields as radio, television, journalism, theater, business, law, public relations, vocational ministry, government, education and industry.

Our teaching philosophy is built around the practical application of communication principles and theory. Courses use activities to build skills in each area of concentration. Every student learns appropriate communication theories and research techniques. State-of-the-art technical equipment and other resources further develop students' skills and enhance their knowledge.

Upon graduation, each student leaves the department with a personal portfolio of work completed during their time at Mississippi College. The portfolio is a record of academic achievement and proof of marketable skills to future potential employers. Take time to examine the Mississippi College core curriculum.

WHAT ARE CLASSES LIKE?

Personal interaction with instructors is a hallmark of the department. Most classes meet in close proximity to faculty offices and other classrooms, creating a true sense of community. Mississippi College currently enjoys a 13-to-1 student to faculty ratio in all classes. You'll find that while curriculum instruction is exceptional, much of the learning takes place in conversations with faculty and peers outside the classroom.

Many of the classes offered in the department revolve around hands-on training and experience. Classes in theater, radio and television, among others, require students to develop practical skills that complement lectures and classroom discussions. This combination of theory and practice provides students a firm foundation of knowldege and skills necessary to be successful in future careers or continued academic work.

WHAT CAN I BE INVOLVED IN?

Communication students are involved in a variety of groups and organizations both on campus and within the department, many of which carry academic credit. Many of the groups are designed for students who show and interest in a specific discipline (such as PRAM, the MC chapter of the Pubilc Relations Association of Mississippi). Others allow students to showcase their talents, whether in public theater performances or competitive debate.

Selected students are invited to join Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association Honor Society. Students with an interest in journalism have the opportunity to write for The Collegian, the student newspaper of Mississippi College, while future journalists and broadcasters find outlets for their creativity and abilities in video projects. These and other learning and service opportunities allow students to discover where their knowledge and skills intersect and lead to future accomplishments.
